Responding to the Coronavirus Epidemic



Many people are expressing frustration, disbelief, confusion, fear, anxiety and sadness about this latest epidemic. This is perfectly understandable, as we are not fully prepared to handle this in our country or the world. The response from government has been lackluster and we have allowed the virus to spread quite a bit. On top of that, people are afraid of being quarantined and buying up groceries like there’s no tomorrow. For some, it may feel like there is no tomorrow. Nonetheless, at a certain point we need to calm down if nothing else to clear our minds and respond more effectively. When we are too afraid, our ability to make good decisions is not as sound. This is true of any level of stress, whether from fear or anxiety. We need to arm ourselves with accurate information and take reasonable precautions to be healthy and sane.


One way that we can protect ourselves is by learning the relaxation response to stress. When we are able to do this, our immune systems, digestive systems, and overall well-being function much better. Hypnosis can help reduce anxiety and depression, as well as tap into our inner resources to cope with stress in general. EMDR therapy can be useful for addressing trauma, panic, and stuck emotions. Video therapy can be useful when you cannot leave the house for whatever reason, or are afraid of becoming infected in the general public. During this time, it may be useful to use video therapy if you are not able to come in for session. Not all insurance companies cover video therapy, even in the midst of this terrible virus epidemic. Nonetheless, it is worth finding out if you can participate in this. Video therapy is just as effective as in-person therapy and can be a good way of reducing your stress amidst all the chaos and confusion that seemed to be surrounding us. I provide all of these types of therapy and would be happy to talk to you about what would work for you.
