How Can Hypnosis Help You?

Updated: Nov 29, 2023

How Can Hypnosis Help?

Hypnosis is a way to bypass the old, self-limiting ways of thinking and being and to reach your unconscious mind. Your conscious mind is smart, but it has only gotten you to where you are now. The unconscious mind has so much more creativity and can use the abilities and qualities that you didn’t even know you had. There are parts of yourself that have hibernate for weeks, months, years. These parts of yourself are very helpful in creating positive change for you.

The unconscious mind has been with you your whole life, and it has seen the success that you’ve discounted before. In a hypnotic state, you can remove the conscious critic. You are more open to exploring new ways of being and acting in the world. These new ways of functioning are the key to your success and happiness. For instance, if someone has negative self-talk in the conscious state, hypnosis can get access to greater self-esteem in the unconscious state. Since self-acceptance is an important keystone for success, wouldn’t it be helpful to build it up?

Will it Make You Cluck Like a Chicken?

This is a common fear and misconception. There is stage hypnosis, where the hypnotist uses a person’s suggestibility to make them do silly or entertaining things. Clinical hypnosis is much different. Unfortunately, the stage hypnotists easily come to mind with the term, “hypnosis.” That is not what we do in psychotherapeutic hypnosis.

Is it Far Out and Weird?

Hypnotic states are actually quite common phenomena in everyday life. We’ve all experienced going to a movie and being so absorbed that we suspend our usual consciousness. When the hero is hurt, we flinch. If he or she is running from a villain, it changes our heart rates and breathing. Other times, we’ve been driving and reached our destinations without knowing how we got there. It is a common phenomenon that the therapist taps into for your benefit to obtain your version of success.

In a trance state, you can accomplish a lot more by using the power of your unconscious or subconscious mind. Hypnosis has been found useful for a number of conditions, including pain control, smoking cessation, weight loss, anxiety, depression, and insomnia.

When Can I Start Benefitting from Hypnosis?

Hypnosis is safe, effective, and often very enjoyable. I’ve had people say, “I never allow myself to relax that deeply. That was really so satisfying and pleasant!” Even better, they start to see changes in their lives, sometimes suddenly and sometimes a bit more gradually. Any type of change needs a little time, like a seed in the ground, to grow. With hypnosis, we nurture the seeds of change in the fertile ground of the unconscious mind.
